Quilt Size Chart
Quilt sizes aren’t standardised the way mattresses are — they depend on how far you want the quilt to hang over the sides and whether it tucks under the pillows. This chart gives typical sizes for each bed, and the calculator works out a custom size from your mattress, then the backing, batting, binding and block layout.

Standard mattress and quilt sizes
| Bed | Mattress (in) | Typical quilt (in) | Calculated: 8 in drop, 10 in tuck |
|---|---|---|---|
| Crib | 28 × 52 | 36 × 52 to 45 × 60 | — |
| Twin | 38 × 75 | 70 × 90 | 72 × 102 |
| Twin XL | 38 × 80 | 70 × 95 | 72 × 107 |
| Full / double | 54 × 75 | 85 × 90 | 88 × 102 |
| Queen | 60 × 80 | 90 × 95 | 96 × 108 |
| King | 76 × 80 | 106 × 95 | 112 × 108 |
| California king | 72 × 84 | 102 × 99 | 108 × 112 |
Typical quilt sizes vary between pattern designers and shops; the right-hand column shows what the calculator gives for a common set of assumptions. Mattress depths vary a lot — measure yours, especially pillow-top mattresses.
How the size is calculated
- Width = mattress width + 2 × (mattress depth + drop).
- Length = mattress length + pillow tuck + (mattress depth + drop at the foot, if the quilt hangs over the foot).
- Round to a whole number of blocks so the pattern fits.
The drop is how far the quilt hangs below the mattress. A coverlet might drop just a few inches; a bedspread reaches the floor. A pillow tuck of 10–15 inches lets the quilt fold under and over the pillows.
Worked example: a queen quilt
A queen mattress is 60 × 80 in and 10 in deep. With an 8 in drop on three sides and a 10 in pillow tuck, the quilt is 60 + 2 × 18 = 96 in wide and 80 + 10 + 18 = 108 in long. With 12 in blocks that’s 8 × 9 = 72 blocks, finishing at 96 × 108 in. Backing from 42 in fabric needs 3 panels of 104 in — about 8.67 yd (or one piece of 108 in wide backing), batting at least 104 × 116 in, and binding 11 strips of 2½ in, about 0.76 yd.
Other quilt sizes
| Quilt | Typical size (in) | Use |
|---|---|---|
| Mini / wall quilt | 24 × 24 to 36 × 36 | Wall hangings, table toppers |
| Baby quilt | 36 × 36 to 45 × 60 | Play mats, cot and stroller (follow safe-sleep guidance: no loose bedding for sleeping infants) |
| Lap / throw | 50 × 65 to 60 × 72 | Sofa throws, gifts |
| Table runner | 12–16 wide, length to suit | Dining tables |
Backing, batting and binding
- Backing and batting should be 4–8 in larger than the quilt top on every side, especially for longarm quilting — ask your quilter.
- Wide-back fabric (108 in) avoids seams on big quilts.
- Binding strips are commonly cut 2¼–2½ in wide across the fabric width; join them end to end.
- Pre-wash or not? Decide before cutting — cotton can shrink a few percent.
Block layout tips
Choose a block size that divides nicely into your target size, or add borders to make up the difference. For a queen quilt with 12-inch blocks, 7 × 8 blocks (84 × 96 in) plus a 6-inch border gives 96 × 108 in — the same finished size with fewer blocks. Sashing strips between blocks also change the finished size: add their width to your layout.
Measuring your bed
- Measure the mattress width and length across the top.
- Measure the depth from the top edge to the bottom seam — include any mattress topper.
- Decide the drop: to cover the box spring, measure from the mattress bottom to the bottom of the box spring or bed rail.
- Decide whether the quilt will tuck under the pillows, and how deep your pillows are.
- Measure an existing quilt you like for comparison.
Pillow-top and deep-pocket mattresses can be 14–18 inches deep, which adds a lot to the width compared with the “standard” charts. If a quilt is for a guest room or a gift, a slightly generous size is usually safer than one that looks skimpy.
Quilt sizes for gifts and special uses
| Purpose | Suggested size |
|---|---|
| Newborn gift / play mat | 36 × 36 to 40 × 40 in |
| Toddler bed | about 45 × 60 in |
| Wheelchair lap quilt | about 36 × 45 in |
| Dorm (Twin XL) | about 70 × 95 in |
| Picnic quilt | 60 × 60 in or larger |
These are common starting points; adjust to the person and the bed.

Frequently asked questions
What size is a queen quilt?
Often about 90 × 95 in to 96 × 108 in, depending on drop and pillow tuck.
What size is a king quilt?
Often about 106 × 95 in to 112 × 108 in.
How much drop should a quilt have?
Commonly 8–12 in below the mattress; more for a bedspread.
How much backing do I need?
Enough for the quilt plus 4–8 in on each side; the calculator works out panels and yards.
How wide should binding strips be?
Commonly 2¼–2½ in.
Can I use my own mattress size?
Yes — choose Custom and enter your measurements.
How many 12-inch blocks for a queen quilt?
About 8 × 9 = 72 blocks for 96 × 108 in, or fewer with borders.
Should I pre-wash quilting fabric?
It’s a personal choice; pre-washing removes shrinkage and excess dye, but some quilters prefer the crinkled look of unwashed fabric after the first wash.
What is the difference between a quilt, coverlet and bedspread?
A coverlet just covers the mattress top and sides, a quilt usually drops a little further, and a bedspread reaches the floor.
How much bigger should batting be?
Usually 4 in larger on every side, or as your longarm quilter asks.
How long does it take to make a quilt?
It varies enormously with size, pattern and quilting method — from a weekend for a simple throw to months for a hand-quilted bed quilt.
Can I make a quilt without borders?
Yes — just choose a block size and count that reaches your target size.
